Ketamine treatment
Ketamine is not FDA-approved specifically for anxiety disorders. Evidence is smaller and more preliminary than the depression literature, and depression findings should not be presented as proof of anxiety treatment effectiveness. Established psychological and medication treatments remain part of a clinician-led assessment.

For Wheat Ridge residents pursuing off-label IV, intramuscular, or sublingual ketamine, it is essential to prepare for self-pay expenses. Because these specific administrations are not FDA-approved for psychiatric conditions, health insurance plans typically exclude them from coverage. Patients should secure a comprehensive, written estimate from their chosen clinic detailing the costs for the medication, mandatory medical monitoring, and any supplementary counseling. You must also factor in transportation and potential lodging expenses if traveling frequently for the standard series of sessions. The FDA has issued guidance on these compounded medications; you can read the details at the FDA warns patients and health care providers about potential risks associated with compounded ketamine products page.
Spravato (esketamine) is an FDA-approved nasal spray designed for specific adult depression diagnoses, and it is more likely to be covered by insurance. However, this coverage usually involves a detailed prior authorization process, requiring proof that standard depression treatments have been ineffective. Even with insurance, patients may still be responsible for out-of-pocket costs, including specialist co-pays and fees for the prolonged clinical observation required during each visit. Working closely with both the clinic's billing department and your insurance provider will clarify your expected financial obligations.
Starting treatment involves an in-depth clinical evaluation to ensure the therapy is appropriate for your specific health background. While telehealth is often utilized for these initial assessments and post-treatment integration, it cannot replace the required on-site clinical supervision for the treatment itself. Wheat Ridge patients must plan for repeated travel to Front Range clinics, keeping in mind that local traffic and changing mountain weather conditions can impact travel times. Ensuring reliable transportation is a critical part of the process. If you or a loved one is in crisis, support is available 24/7 through the Colorado Mental Health Line by dialing or texting 988, or calling 911 for immediate emergencies.
For those utilizing Spravato, the FDA mandates administration within a certified healthcare facility under a Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS). Patients are monitored for a minimum of two hours post-administration to ensure stability. Because the medication impairs reflexes, driving is strictly forbidden until the next day, meaning a responsible adult must coordinate your ride home. Spravato is never dispensed for home use. Although some providers may prescribe compounded ketamine for at-home administration off-label, these formulations lack FDA approval for psychiatric care. The FDA strongly warns against the physical and psychological dangers of utilizing ketamine without direct, on-site professional monitoring.
Spravato is an FDA-approved esketamine nasal spray for certain adult depression indications and is administered in certified clinics. Ketamine infusions deliver the drug intravenously and are used off-label for psychiatric conditions. Both require strict clinical observation, but they differ significantly regarding FDA approval status, administration methods, and insurance coverage.
Spravato is never approved for home use and requires a certified clinic setting. While some doctors prescribe off-label compounded sublingual ketamine for home administration, this is not FDA-approved for mental health care. The FDA strongly warns against unmonitored home use due to potential cardiovascular spikes and profound psychological distress.
Most clinical protocols begin with an intensive induction phase, often consisting of twice-weekly sessions over several weeks. After this initial period, patients may transition to a less frequent maintenance schedule based on their individual response. Your healthcare provider will design and adjust a specific timeline tailored to your progress.
Yes, patients commonly experience temporary side effects during administration. These can include dissociation, elevated blood pressure, dizziness, or mild nausea. Because of these potential reactions, continuous medical monitoring in a clinical environment is essential. These effects typically subside shortly after the session concludes, prior to being discharged.
While some treatment centers accept self-referrals, a formal referral from your primary care physician or a psychiatrist is highly encouraged. A referral ensures that the clinic has a comprehensive understanding of your medical history. Furthermore, insurance companies almost always require documented prior treatments before approving coverage for Spravato.
Ketamine and Spravato can significantly impair your reflexes, judgment, and physical coordination for hours after administration. For your safety and the safety of others, clinical protocols and FDA regulations prohibit driving or operating heavy machinery until the day following your treatment, after you have had a restful sleep.
Costs, coverage & aftercare
IV, IM and compounded ketamine for psychiatric conditions are off-label; many programs are self-pay. Ask about assessment, medication, administration, monitoring, therapy and maintenance charges separately. We do not assume a statewide price.
Spravato is FDA-approved esketamine, not the same as ketamine infusions. Coverage is not guaranteed. Check eligibility, prior authorization, network status, drug and visit charges, deductibles and copays with your insurer and clinic.
Spravato requires a certified healthcare setting and monitoring for at least two hours. Arrange transport home; do not drive until the next day after restful sleep. For other ketamine treatments, follow your clinician's instructions. Follow-up and maintenance depend on response and tolerability.
Ask who manages your medications, how your usual clinician will receive updates, and whom to contact between visits. Neither a shortage designation nor local depression statistics show that ketamine is appropriate or effective for you. Consult a licensed physician.
